Monday - Friday 0800-1630, with occasional flex to off shifts as necessary for education and program oversight

No weekends or holidays

Neuro and/or stroke RN experience preferred

General Summary

Develops, implements and coordinates the WellSpan Health Stroke Center with a comprehensive focus along the continuum of care.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with the medical and nursing leadership, assumes responsibility for the development, implementation and coordination of the disease specific WellSpan Health Stroke Center.

  • Serves as a clinical expert on all aspects of stroke care to health care professionals, hospital personnel, patients, families and the community.

  • Provides leadership in development, maintenance, implementation, and evaluation of written care protocols including physician's standing orders based on established guidelines from the American Stroke Association, clinical pathways, clinical practice guidelines and procedures for rapid response to brain attacks.

  • Develops and facilitates ongoing professional education programs for hospital medical staff and nursing, including programs for Emergency Medical Services.

  • Develops and implements the patient education process for all hospitalized stroke patients with emphasis on stroke symptom recognition, stroke prevention, risk factor modification, lifestyle changes and structured rehabilitation across the continuum of care.

  • Serves as a co-chair to the Stroke Clinical Effectiveness Team/Interdisciplinary Stroke Committee/Stroke Operations Committee which meets at least bi-monthly. Prepares agenda and progress reports for the team that shows evidence of the outcomes of care delivery, reviews relevant standards of care, protocols, and established guidelines. Develops, implements, and evaluates action plans for improvement with the team.

  • Assists the inpatient Stroke Medical Director with identification, review and presentation of morbidity and mortality. Presents outcome data within relevant quality forums.

  • Develops, maintains, and updates all required documentation for Joint Commission or DNV-GL disease-specific certification including required agreements with ancillary services, logbooks, licensure/board certifications, performance improvement activities written care protocols, continuing education credits for physicians and nurses on staff and organizational charts. Ensures that the System adheres to the Joint Commission or DNV-GL standards and is prepared for site visits.

  • In conjunction with the Neuroscience Service Line and nursing leadership, develops a strategic plan that includes an assessment of the service population's need for acute and ongoing care, along with the Center's capacity to market services to those needs.

  • Utilizes patient experience data to address issues that require attention to improve patient perception of care.

  • Develops, coordinates, and participates in community awareness programs about stroke prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

  • Collects, analyses, and disseminates data and information relevant to stroke care delivery utilizing the Get With the Guidelines Registry and other internal data sources to all internal stakeholders.

  • Supports the medical record abstraction process in collaboration with the Clinical Quality Department.

  • Assists the Program Director- Stroke with the coordination of the TeleStroke Program as well as the Routine Inpatient Stroke Follow-up and General Neurology consultation process.

  • Support clinical staff within the Emergency Department, inpatient and procedural areas of care when patients experience stroke symptoms and evaluate opportunities for improvement.

Common Expectations:

  • Is an active member of hospital and community committees that are related to stoke patient care and community awareness. Represents the stoke program at local, state and national meetings.

  • Serves as a liaison with pre-hospital providers, EMS, acute rehabilitation centers, other stroke centers, clinics, government agencies and stroke associations

  • Assists with the development of the annual stoke budget, both operating and capital expenses. Ensures quality stroke care is given while maximizing financial reimbursement and developing opportunities for cost savings.

  • Demonstrates motivation for learning through independent reading, professional networking and attending relevant conferences and seminars.

  • Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelors Degree Required

  • Masters Degree Preferred

Work Experience:

  • 5 years Experience in nursing. Required and

  • 2 years Experience in neurology. Required and

  • Medical/Surgical experience. Required

  • Neurosurgery nursing experience. Preferred and

  • Neurology experience. Preferred

Licenses:

  • Licensed Registered Nurse Upon Hire Required or

  • Registered Nurse Multi State License Upon Hire Required

  • Certified Neuroscience Registered Nurse Upon Hire Preferred
