Clinical Manager - Respiratory Care Services

General Summary

Assists with the development and evaluation of Respiratory Care Services. The Clinical Manager is a leader, innovator, and change agent who impacts on the improvement of quality respiratory care to patients. Provides expert and complex clinical and technical respiratory training to the respiratory care staff; functions as a consultant to other health care providers within the hospital and the community; develops and monitors implementation of new respiratory care techniques and standards of practice; exercises clinical leadership through practice, development of staff, and research. Additionally, this position will perform in depth and comprehensive patient evaluations that will assess the efficacy and appropriateness of care; therapeutic status, educational needs and rehabilitative potential of the patient in order to more effectively coordinate the Disease Management process and act as a liaison between Respiratory Staff, Physicians, Nursing, Physical Therapy, Social Services and other healthcare disciplines as well as the patient, the patients' family and/or caretaker.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Maintains state of art knowledge of area of specialty, healthcare trends and practice, and populations served.

  • Maintains a level of computer literacy appropriate to their role.

  • Meets and maintains current all unit specific and organizational skills/competencies, certifications/licensures, as required.

  • Completes hospital-required reviews, e.g. HIPAA, safety, health screening, care concerns, and others as assigned.

  • Adheres to National Patient Safety Goals.

  • Completes required reports (e.g. PI Dash Boards, benchmarks, etc.) on time.

  • Insures that 100% of all employees have current licenses, completed yearly health checks, CPR, orientation or re-orientation, where applicable.

  • Completes 100% of employee evaluations on time, in a thoughtful and constructive manner. For non-bargaining employees, follows established guidelines for recommended increases.

  • Displays ability and skill in budget development, monitoring, and remaining within budgetary limits. Flexes costs downward when necessary, especially when scheduling and monitoring hours worked.

  • Evaluates operations from a workflow perspective and responds appropriately, redesigns per customer needs and competitive benchmarks.

  • Utilizes appropriate mechanisms to solve problems and resolve conflict. Directs staff to do same.

  • Attends and actively participates/leads unit-based meetings, serves on Department of Patient Services committees and/or task forces as requested and as appropriate.

  • Keeps Director updated regarding unit/personnel/patient activities.

  • Demonstrates flexibility in response to role changes necessitated by unit activity, organizational change and future direction.

  • Works with staff to improve ownership of their practice, process and performance.

  • Acts as effective resource for staff and demonstrates leadership through clinical practice, coaching, supervision, teaching and professional attitudes and behaviors.

  • Advocates to ensure that goals/expected outcomes for patient care are set mutually with the patient and pertinent others.

  • Facilitates student experiences through cooperation and collaboration with faculty.

  • Responds appropriately to emergency situations.

  • Fosters a practice environment that supports interdisciplinary collaboration.

  • Reviews charge reports. Assimilates staffing, equipment, and clinical priorities.

  • Meets deadlines for budgeting and scheduling input.

  • Meets quarterly with all staff to ensure completion of goals and training.

  • Promotes autonomy and critical thinking.

  • Ensures that core competencies and training records are up to date.

  • Develops, implements, and evaluates structure, process and outcome standards for the education, competency, and orientation programs for respiratory care.

  • Completes special projects and research tasks as assigned.

  • Assists in the development of new projects or processes.

  • Assesses patients for efficacious response to therapy.

  • Communicates recommendations as to type and frequency of therapeutic modalities to Physicians.

  • Monitors and communicates patient condition as appropriate.

  • Coordinates patient care with Physicians and other patient care disciplines.

  • Participates in medical team rounds, evaluates care provided by RCP and collaborates with healthcare team to ensure quality patient care.

  • Assists in developing hospital and post discharge patient care plans as a component of the Disease Management Process and in compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC) Hospital Accreditation Standards (HAS)

  • Serves as a clinical and technical resource to the Respiratory, Nursing, and Physician Staff.

  • Performs advanced respiratory care modalities.

  • Performs other related duties as identified.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

  • Associates Degree Respiratory Therapy Required

  • Bachelors Degree Respiratory Therapy (within 36 months of hire) Required

Work Experience:

  • Less than 1 year Experience applying customer service behaviors and communication skills required Required

  • 5 years Respiratory in acute care Preferred

  • 1 year Leadership/management Preferred

  • Less than 1 year Management and Staff Development Preferred

  • Less than 1 year Computerized documentation Required

  • Less than 1 year NICU Preferred

Licenses:

  • Licensed Respiratory Therapist Upon Hire Required

  • Heartsaver First Aid CPR/AED within 180 days Required

  • Neonatal Resusc Prg within 180 days Required

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support within 180 days Required

  • Ped Adv Life Support within 180 days Required
